My Newest Addiction

So I have been absolutely horrible at keeping up with my posts lately and I apologize. Most of my time has been trying to balance finding a new research position and keeping up with my orders. Time really flies when you only have a few months before your steady paychecks stop showing up. So I'll try to be better at posting new things. I promise.

**********

I am really excited about my new addiction. For a long time I have been amazed by everyone that can make these beautiful beaded triangles. I actually thought that you made three little triangles and then stitched them together. It wasn't till I really looked at one that I realized that's not how you do it at all, you stitch them from the center out. Genius.

So Monday I sat down with some beads and decided to give it a go. It took me a little bit to figure out how you start one, and I know I could have gone and got some instrucitons, but I hate reading instructions and it makes me proud to be able to figure it out on my own. And this is what I came up with. I've made two so far and I'm working on a third one. I think they look pretty cool.

I haven't really ventured into designs yet, but eventually when I get a better hang of them I might. I just really thought they were cool and have always wanted to try them. Please forgive the crappy picture. I took it at work during my lunch. The colors are really off.

The triangles look great! I have never attempted triangles myself, but would love to try one sometime. I have not had much luck finding instructions for them. Do you have any advice for newbies wanting to give it a shot? Thanks!

I remember people selling work like this at craft fairs when I was a kid. It's been years since I've seen it ~ still love it too!

They are great fun, aren't they? And yes, they are addicting.

I'll give you a little tip -- you know that you start with just three beads in the center. Well, if you want to make a triangle that's open in the center, start with a larger number of beads (yeah, now that I type that it sounds stupid).

But there's a formula... for a closed-center triangle, start with 3 beads. If you want to make a hole, start with 9, 15, or 21 beads. The larger the number of beads you start with, the larger the hole.

I have a whole stack of these sitting on my beading board right now.

Thank you all for your lovely comments. These are so fun to make.

I was looking for some directions as asked. Here is what I found:

I think there is a pattern in the Oct/Nov 2008 issue of beadwork, as well as the Dec/Jan 2009 issued

http://thisyearsdozen.wordpress.com/2008/05/25/part-1-how-to-make-a-peyote-triangle-bracelet/

This is a difficult pattern to find.

But like MaryLou (she is much better at these then me :D) said before, you start with a ring of 3 (or more) and work outward sort of combination of ndeble at the corners and peyote for the rest. Hopefully the directions will explain it to you better.

And Here's a link to MaryLou's triangles, very very cool
